"Colour has a primal effect on people and colour is the main feature of my work".
-Nike Savvas
This was the first solo exhibition from Nike Savvas for more than 10 years. The installation evokes the viewer to interactively walk through the installation and experience the colour and geometry that are the main elements of Savvas' work.
After visiting Nike Savvas' LIBERTY AND ANARCHY exhibition at the Leeds City Art Gallery I was inspired by the shape, colour and form of the overall experience of the installation. When walking through the hundreds of strips in a maze type form it teases the human eye as the colours start to emerge together to create movement. The whole experience forces you to think about what you are really seeing. It questions your own sight and how you are part of the exhibition, when you walk through the hundreds of various coloured strips you start to feel as the whole display is moving with you, the blurring of the colours is almost like a moving image, yet you are the one that is moving and the installation is still.
I collected a variety of interesting photographs from the experience of the installation, some still, clear and crisp shots to show the vibrancy of the colour and shape and some blurred images to capture the experience of your eyes when walking through the installation.
Furthermore, there were also geometric shapes and structures displayed in the exhibition, created from pieces of wooden frames and coloured string.
"Savvas pushes at the boundaries of fine art and craft, of painting and sculpture to present new configurations of space, form and colour that confound our expectations."
